Approximately 60% of the high-energy gamma-ray sources in the 2nd EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) catalog remain unidentified. So far none of these sources has been definitively identified with astronomical objects known at other wavelengths, and this has turned out to be one of the biggest mysteries presented by EGRET. In this article we describe the latitude and longitude distributions of the unidentified sources and discuss their collective properties. The distribution of the unidentified sources is unlike that of the identified classes, like pulsars or blazars, although the unidentified sources do seem to be correlated with our galaxy. In the intermediate Galactic latitudes, between 5° and 30°, there appears to be an excess of unidentified sources that can be associated with the Gould Belt of massive stars and interstellar clouds. Statistical analysis of the EGRET source distribution indicates that many of the plane sources are correlated with OB associations or other tracers of star formation likely to be sites harboring pulsars. Some of the Galactic unidentified sources are strongly correlated with supernova remnants. The association seems strongest for supernova remnants close to molecular clouds, which might be targets for cosmic rays accelerated in the supernova remnants. A few of the high-latitude unidentified sources seen by EGRET may be previously unrecognized blazars or other type of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). This article reviews the work done towards understanding the nature of the unidentified sources seen by EGRET.
