Although the basic techniques used in Very High and Ultra High Energy γ-ray astronomy have been available for more than 30 years, it is only in the past decade (mostly in the EGRET era) that the disciplines have become viable with the production of verifiable results. Well-established steady sources include the Crab Nebula, PSR1706-44 and Vela as well as the AGNs, Markarian 421 and 501. The early successes of EGRET were a catalyst and accelerated the development of advanced atmospheric Čerenkov telescopes. The useful symbiosis that has developed between space and ground-based γ-ray observations is the major subject of this review.
