We present the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of four nearby starburst galaxies. We analyse them in terms of the stellar content and the kinematics of the interstellar medium and we discuss the implications of these results for the interpretation of the UV spectra of high redshift galaxies. The observations of Starbursts in this spectral range allow us to explore new techniques to derive the stellar content in these galaxies, that can be latter applied to the study of the star formation history in high redshift star forming galaxies. Evolutionary synthesis models of a stellar population using the line profile of O VI+Lβ+C II are presented. O VI is a resonance line that develops a P Cygni profile when formed in the stellar winds of the most massive stars. When these stars are absent, no O VI is formed. In contrast, Lβ, and C II are very sensitive indicators for B stars. These lines are used in combination with C IV and Si IV to constrain the star formation history in these local Starbursts. The spectra are also rich in strong interstellar absorption lines. These lines are blueshifted by several hundred km s-1 with respect to the systemic velocity, indicating large scale motions of the interstellar gas. Lα in emission is also detected in three of the galaxies. In some starbursts the profile of Lα is asymmetric, and the blue wing is absorbed by neutral gas. This indicates that the velocity structure of the neutral gas and the scattering by HI atoms play also an important role in the escape of Lα photons.
