The present reexamination of the temperatures of the permanently shadowed crater regions of the moon and Mercury use a truncated cone crater model to examine the wavelength and directional dependences of surface medium albedo and emissivity. Lower temperature estimates are obtained than in earlier attempts, due to the lower absorptivity of the water ice that may exist in the shadowed regions.
