Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provide unique insights into the properties of neutron stars and black holes, accretion physics close to the neutron star surface and black hole event horizon, and the structure and evolution of accretion discs. After almost 4 decades of space and ground-based studies, we now have detailed information on a wide range of their fundamental properties, some of which I will attempt to summarise here.
