The Mars Observer Camera is designed to photograph selected regions of the Martian surface at a resolution of 1.4 m. To locate these high resolution images, concurrent wide angle regional photographs are taken at a resolution of 230 m. In addition photographs at 7.5-km resolution are taken once every 24 h to create global maps and to study the atmosphere. The camera is described and illustrated. The operational requirements for making the three types of photographs are discussed.
