Space-based observations of SN 1987A with IUE and then with HST have provided a clearer picture of its nature both through superb angular resolution and through access to its ultraviolet emission. The observations help establish the nature of the progenitor star, reveal evidence for mass loss before the explosion, constrain the physics of the explosion, illuminate radiative transfer through the disrupted star, and exhibit a remarkably wide range of physical mechanisms that produce the emission we see today. A long, dense, and thorough observational program has allowed us to trace the fading of SN 1987A over 20 years during which the flux has declined by a factor of 15,000,000. Future prospects for studying SN 1987A are bright-when HST is refurbished in 2008, the unsolved problems of SN 1987A will be a prime target for further investigation.
