Hst Proposal Id #5630 Galaxies &Amp, Clusters Stellar Populations

Scientific paper

Two outstanding problems in Stellar Populations are the existence of luminous asymptotic giant branch stars in the bulges of Local Group galaxies and the existence of an ultraviolet upturn in the spectral energy distribution of many early type galaxies. It is likely that the UV upturn is due to the presence of very hot luminous post-AGB stars of some kind. The aim of these observations is to resolve the source of the UV upturn into stars and to learn more about the AGB luminosity function in early type galaxies.
