We propose to obtain VRI images of a sample of intermediate- age LMC clusters to fill an important gap in the literature. The main purpose of our observations is the calibration of evolutionary stellar population models at intermediate ages for each passband, which is currently unavailable due to the lack of observational data. The importance of this calibration is that the bolometric luminosity of stellar populations at ages of 10^8 - 10^9 yr is dominated by bright Asymptotic Giant Branch stars, whose theoretical modelling is highly uncertain. The SED of bright AGB stars is also poorly known, therefore synthetic colors must be calibrated in every passband. Star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds are the only nearby simple stellar populations that cover the appropriate age interval, thus offering the unique opportunity for such a calibration. Curiously, observations in R and I are unavailable at present, while these passbands are extremely important. For instance, the B-R, B-I and V-I colors are the most used ones in studies of (extragalactic) stellar systems with Hubble Space Telescope and large ground-based telescopes, and R and I will be the only available optical passbands at the Next Generation Space Telescope. With the proposed data set, we will make calibrated population synthesis models available to enable the identification of (extragalactic) stellar systems being in this important age regime.
