Quasicontinuous fragmentation occurs for large as well as small meteoroids. Dust trails of bolides prove this directly. Possible physical mechanisms for this phenomenon are considered. It is concluded that the dominant quasicontinuous fragmentation mechanism is the entrainment of refractory particles from the boundaries of meteoroids by vapor fluxes formed at the front parts of their surfaces when the connecting pieces joining them are softened. Those particles that are drawn into the tail zone behind the body survive to form the dust trails. The sizes of the particles lie in the range 2 - 100 μm (with the mode at around 10 μm). Other particles are ejected by vapor pressure at the front surface, but they evaporate rapidly.
