We calculate the effect of retrograde accretion of matter onto a rotating black hole. Accreting matter is assumed to form a geometrically thin or thick accretion disk. Exact analytical formulas are derived. It is shown that after accreting ~0.2 of its initial mass, a black hole is completely spun-down. We also perform a number of simulations in which small portions of mass are accreting with angular momentum randomly chosen: either parallel or anti-parallel with respect to the black hole's spin. Such a scenario can eventually account for the low-spin black holes postulated by Wilson & Colbert (1995ApJ...438...62W) to reside in radio-quiet quasars.
