Recent progress on monitoring variations in the first and second degree gravitational harmonics of the Earth using satellite laser ranging is presented. The problem of interpreting the observed signals in terms of geophysical excitations is discussed, particularly for the second degree zonal variations. The difficulty in separating changes due to postglacial rebound from those due to the 18.6 year tide is demonstrated, as is the sensitivity in the results to long period variability in the atmosphere or cryosphere. The kinematic interpretation of the first degree variations as changes in the position of the solid Earth with respect to the center of mass or geocenter is developed, and time series of such variations over the period 1987-present are presented.
