It is shown that the Hamiltonian of a real massless scalar field that is
minimally coupled cannot be diagonalized when the wavelength is greater
than the Hubble horizon, if a suitable variable is taken to be a
canonical one. Therefore, graviton creation cannot be calculated by the
Hamiltonian diagonalization method.
