Scientific paper

Papers are presented on the physics of the sun and the region influenced by it during solar quiet and active periods. Specific topics include large-scale solar magnetic fields, coronal holes and high-speed solar wind streams, the relation of helium line emission to solar atmospheric structure, and the scientific objectives of the International Solar Polar Mission. Attention is also given to activated solar filaments and flares, radio emission from impulsive phase flares and type III bursts, X-ray bright points, coronal transients, and the chemical composition of energetic charged particles in interplanetary space.
