Variations in the occurrence of range-type and frequency-type equatorial spread F with season and solar activity are examined. Determinations of the percent occurrence of the phenomena throughout the day are compared for years of sunspot minima and maxima from 1962-1974. It is found that during any solar epoch the occurrence of range spread is at a maximum at 2100 LT and around the months of November and February, with a secondary peak at 0500 LT during the June solstices. Frequency spread is found to be at a maximum around 0000 LT and June-July. High solar activity is observed to be accompanied by increases in the rate of increase and the peak values of post-sunset range spread F occurrence, with low solar activity raising the occurrence of range spread during the post-midnight hours, especially at the June solstices. Results also indicate that it is the range-type of spread F which is associated with the rapid post-sunset increase of the height rise of the F layer and the frequency-type is an aftereffect of range spread.
