Electron density irregularities and associated plasma instabilities in the equatorial electrojet have been observed with an HF radar. For the lowest frequencies radio waves are scattered and refracted in the E layer and are also reflected by the F layer, allowing new scatter geometries to be observed. Attention is given to Doppler shift variation versus both oblique range and wavelength, and to the use of only one radar operating frequency to study spectral variations with wavelength. Also considered are various recently proposed ionospheric scatter modes for interpreting echoes at ranges larger than 300 km.
