Current concepts of the chemical composition and the structure of Saturn's atmosphere, in accordance with observational and theoretical results obtained mainly from 1973 through 1977, are examined. One of the most important problems in the study of Saturn's atmosphere is the physical nature of the aerosol material (particles of condensation and dust) and its distribution with respect to altitude and to latitude. The optical properties of Saturn's visible cloud cover, and their influence on spectral estimates of the contents of absorbing gases, are discussed.
