The occurrence of globular clusters in the Galactic halo and in the halos of nearby galaxies, is reviewed. Observational data concerning the structure, chemical composition, and the stages in the evolution of a globular cluster are discussed with reference made to current theories of low-mass stellar evolution. Physical constraints on the evolutionary parameters of a globular cluster are examined within the framework of current theory for pulsating variable stars. The physical constaints are considered in connection with more general cosmological problems.
