A two-layer model for absorption-band formation is examined which comprises a purely gaseous atmosphere above the clouds and a homogeneous semiinfinite cloud layer. Approximate formulas are used to analyze the correlation between observed properties (absorption-band depths at the disk center and the limb) and parameters of the two-layer model (aerosol volume scattering coefficient and optical depth of the atmosphere above the clouds). Diagrams are provided which illustrate this correlation for different values of the asymmetry parameter of the Henyey-Greenstein scattering indicatrix. Applications to Jupiter and Saturn are briefly considered, the required accuracy of spectral measurements is evaluated, and possibilities of detecting horizontal and vertical inhomogeneities in the planetary cloud cover are discussed.
