The MiniBooNE E-8981 experiment at Fermilab has been designed to confirm or dismiss the LSND observation by looking for νe appearance in a νμ beam. The experiment began taking beam data in September 2002. Here we describe the experiment, the first neutrino candidate events, and our expected sensitivity to a neutrino oscillation signal.
