We propose to use the GMOS-N and GMOS-S IFUs to measure the distribution and kinematics of young and old stellar populations in a sample of 10 nearby E+A galaxies. These rare galaxies may represent an important phase of galaxy evolution as the rapid transformation from star-forming (late-type) to quiescent (early-type) spheroidal galaxies. With current numerical simulations is now possible to make firm, testable predictions about the spatial and velocity distribution of stars for a variety of models for E+A formation. We will use these models to interpret our data and to constrain the primary mechanism driving the transformation. This will help to underpin one of the primariy uncertainties in theories of galaxy evolution. This proposal builds on the recent succesful pilot study of Swinbank et al. (2005 ApJ 620 260) which has demonstrated the feasibility of tracing the spatial and velocity distribution of young massive (A) stars through H-delta and H-gamma absorption lines with the GMOS-South IFU.
