We propose to obtain GNIRS observations of rest-frame optical emission lines including H(beta), [OIII], H(alpha), and [NII] for 10 galaxies at 1.0<=z < 1.5, drawn from the DEEP2 redshift survey. These objects have precise Keck II/DEIMOS [OII] redshifts, which are essential for near-infrared spectroscopic follow-up. With a pilot sample of 5 DEEP2 galaxies, we have detected significant evolution from z=0-1 in the relationships among gas phase Oxygen abundance (Z), luminosity (L), and stellar mass (M) - fundamental metrics of the galaxy formation process. Based on emission line ratios, we also detect differences in z> 1 H II region physical conditions, relative to typical star-forming galaxies at z~ 0. These results are intriguing, but we require a larger sample at z~1 to place them on a statistical footing. GNIRS in cross-dispersed mode has the unique capability to cover H(beta), [OIII], H(alpha), and [NII] emission lines simultaneously for galaxies at 1.0<=z < 1.5. It is therefore ideally suited to measuring the chemical abundances, physical conditions, and - with the simultaneous measurement of H(alpha) and H(beta) - dust extinction in high-redshift star-forming galaxies.
