The HEGRA system of five Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) has been used in 2000 and 2001 for a comprehensive study of the γ-ray emission from the BL Lac objects Mkn 421 and Mkn 501 in the energy range above 500 GeV. Here we summarize the TeV characteristics of Mkn 421 in 2000 and 2001 and of Mkn 501 in 2000. In particular, an unprecedented prolonged highintensity state of Mkn 421 in Jan. /Feb. 2001 enabled detailed temporal and spectral studies.
