Detailed measurements of the parameters of a shear Alfven wave in the earth's magnetosphere have allowed a limit of about equal to or less than 2.4 x 10 to the minus 48th grams to be placed on the rest mass of the photon. This limit is comparable to that determined recently by Hollweg (1974) from statistical properties of the Alfven waves in the solar wind (about equal to or less than 1.3 x 10 to the minus 48th grams) and, together, the two limits represent the best present upper limits to the photon rest mass as derived from measurements of magnetohydrodynamic waves.
