Possible reasons for the significant difference between the estimated Love numbers obtained by Douglas et al. (1973) for the two satellites GEOS 1 and GEOS 2 are discussed. It is suggested that in a future analysis individual estimates of the tidal parameters should be obtained for each important tidal frequency in place of 'global' values or mean values. The disregard of tidal perturbations in the determination of the zonal harmonics of the gravity field could also be a reason for the observed discrepancy between the two Love numbers.
