The V-shock model, which identifies the V-shock as the primary mechanism for the acceleration of electrons responsible for the discrete aurora, is reviewed with attention to the dynamics of auroral striations, the anomalous motion of barium plasma at high altitudes, and in situ observations of large electric fields. Double-layer models and two-dimensional laminar shocks in a magnetized plasma are discussed, and the nature of the energy source for the aurora is considered with reference to energization processes in the plasma sheet, large-scale turbulence, transfer of energy from microscopic to macroscopic size scales, and generation of ion cyclotron flute-mode turbulence. Unresolved problems relating to the mechanisms of the diffuse aurora and the auroral substorm are indicated.
