A review is presented of the progress made in the study of relaxing gases since the mid-1960s. The conservation equations are considered along with the effects of changing chemistry, a quantum-level description related to generalized chemistry, source terms in relaxation equations, equilibrium and frozen states, aspects of thermodynamics, and a model relaxing gas. Acoustic and linear theories are examined, taking into account the acoustic disturbance of an equilibrium background, the dispersion and the dissipation of harmonic waves, signaling problems, the linear theory concerning flow problems, acoustic waves and radiation. Attention is also given to shock waves, the evolution of finite-amplitude waves, flow in nozzles, and multiphase flows.
