Two axisymmetric, or zonal, nondipole field configurations, one predominantly octupolar and the other predominantly quadrupolar, are described. The two configurations have been considered as possible intermediate states of the geomagnetic field during reversals. It is shown that the two configurations would effect the transitional virtual geomagnetic pole behavior in different ways. If reversal records from both northern latitudes and southern latitudes were available, the field configurations could be distinguished; their causative dynamo processes could also be distinguished if each geometry reflects a reversal process which starts in a particular region of the core.
