Internal motions of bodies are taken into account with reference to the post-Newtonian approximations for a bounded system of extended bodies with an arbitrary internal structure. Attention is given to conditions under which the motion of the bodies deviates from the geodesic motion in a single global coordinate frame. Tidal interactions are deliberately omitted to preserve the generality of the description.
