A hierarchy of three simplified non-LTE CO2 models is presented. The models are distinguished by the number of states included in solving for the steady-state populations of the CO2 vibrational levels. The accuracy of the models is determined by comparing with the extended model of Shved et al. (J. Atmos. Solar-Terr. Phys. 60 (1998) 289). The simplest model proposed contains 55 excited vibrational states belonging to five CO2 isotopes. This model is sufficient to calculate the low-lying vibrational state populations with reasonable accuracy. The errors introduced by the simplest model in calculating the total non-LTE earth limb radiance in the 4.3 and 15μmCO2 bands do not exceed /~10% and /~1%, respectively. Furthermore, the errors introduced in calculating the rate of net CO2 infrared radiative heating do not exceed ~0.01K/d above 80km and increase to no more than ~0.04K/d at the stratopause.
