The physics of the energy storage, energy release and particle dissipation stages of solar flares is reviewed. The major role of the solar photospheric magnetic field in controlling atmospheric plasma motions is discussed, and various possible magnetic configurations for the storage and subsequent release of atmospheric energy are examined. The relaxation of the field configurations, by a process involving field reconnection or annihilation, towards a closer approach to a potential field configuration, which results in the release of energy in the form of accelerated charged particles, is then discussed, with attention given to the possible natures of the instabilities giving rise to the release. The processes of energy dissipation which lead to the production of observed electromagnetic fluxes are then considered. It is noted that measurements to be made by the Solar Maximum Mission are expected to advance significantly the current understanding of the flare mechanism.
