Coronal Mass Ejections, Solar Cycle, Magnetic Field

Scientific paper

Here is a brief review of current thinking about the origin and function of magnetic helicity in coronal mass ejections. Magnetic helicity is thought to be generated either by the solar dynamo, by Coriolis forces in the turbulent convection zone, or by differential rotation's effective shearing of coronal fields. The mechanisms are discussed, especially with regard to what they suggest that observers should use to detect the build-up of helicity in coronal features so that the onset of a CME can be forecast.
