The work of Belinsky et al. (1985) pertaining to the phase space of a scalar field with nonminimal coupling to the Ricci scalar in the Lagrangian is discussed. The analysis is then extended to a positive coupling constant and to a more general potential. Particular attention is given to the existence of forbidden regions of phase space and to semiclassical stability of vacuum states.
