The rationale for pushing for the development of microsatellite missions equipped with miniaturized scientific payloads for the study of outer planets is described. The conceptual and feasibility design study of an Io Probe performed by DARA a decade ago is used to demonstrate its scientific goals and technical viability. It is suggested that such an approach is both cost-effective and useful in establishing international cooperation among the national space agencies and academic institutions.
