In a time of tight belts and political uncertainty in the UK, a budget settlement that does not decrease money awarded to science has to be a good step, but it is clear that the maintenance of funding announced last month has a price for the research councils.
Extraterrestrial chemistry, a UK research strength, is now reinforcing community links through the Cosmochemical Analysis Network (CAN), which allows members access to world-class analytical facilities, enabling UK scientists to study extraterrestrial materials in all its forms and prepare for samples returned by future missions.
