Type Ii Supernova Explosion, Massive Stars

Scientific paper

This paper suggests that the mechanism behind a Type II supernova explosion involves adiabatic superheating in fusing matter shells that fall in toward collapsing iron cores at the centers of relatively massive stars. It is also suggested that this superheating effect causes a runaway chain reaction in at least one of the in-falling matter shells and that the initial explosion may trigger subsequent explosions in other rapidly compressed matter shells. This mechanism is significantly different than other mechanisms that have been proposed in the past to explain how a Type II supernova explodes.
