In an effort to determine the characteristic sizes of irregularities of ionospheric emission layers, photographic observations of the first emission layer at a height of about 100 km are compared with model calculations of the concentration distribution of the excited atoms. The scale of heights of the vertical concentration distribution above the layer brightness maximum (about 6.5 km) is determined along with the characteristic sizes of horizontal irregularities (about 400 km).
