We present results from spectroscopic observations of sunspots in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength range obtained by SUMER on SOHO. The atmospheric conditions above sunspots are very special and remarkably different compared to other parts of the solar atmosphere. The transition region, which is normally a thin layer extends above sunspots very high in altitude and is filled with rather cold, low-density plasma. Sunspot plumes are sites of systematic downflow into a bottom layer, which is coherently oscillating with a 3-minute period.
