The return current (RC) related effects represent in flares one of the possible mechanisms of conversion of the kinetic energy of electron beams into the thermal energy of flare plasma. Using a 1-D current-in-cell model, details of formation and properties of the RC driven by monoenergetic electron beams are calculated. Based on results of the simulations, the influence of the RC on the energy deposit in flares is discussed.
