A model of CO line formation in bipolar flows is presented. Global analysis of computed profiles and maps shows that the flow force and mechanical luminosity derived from CO data are uncertain by at least a factor of 10 - 30, and cannot be used to discriminate between the various mechanisms proposed for protostellar mass-loss. On the other hand, empirical flow models appear as a powerful tool for investigating the geometry and kinematics of molecular flows. Resulting constraints on the structure of observed flows are discussed.
