Interferometry is a powerful technique to collect spatial information and produce high resolution images of the sky. With the development of technologies it has become the main technique for ground based imaging instrumentation at all wavelengths from radio domain to visible light. Yet, the use of this technique is not straightforward. Image reconstruction involves complex data processing and the basic underlying principles are sometimes difficult to grasp in an intuitive way. The aim of this introductory lecture is to address basic questions such as: What does an interferometer actually measure? How can these measurements be used to reconstruct an image of the source? trying as much as possible to give an intuitive picture of the concepts. The instrumentation and methods used in practice are also briefly described and the main current and future interferometers are presented.
