The study of the CO infrared bands in atmospheres of long period variables is presented. The 8 Mira and semiregular variables were observed in the CO fundamental band (4.7 microns) and in the first two overtones (2.3 and 1.55 microns) with low resolution spectroscopy. It is shown that the intensities of the different bands do not follow the Boltzmann distribution for a single temperature. In particular no fundamental band is detected. The width of the second overtone was found to significantly broader than that for the first overtone. The results lead to the conclusion that the different bands are characteristics features for different temperature layers in the atmospheres and circumstellar enevelopes of variables.
