Weak gravitational lensing is a powerful technique to map and study the dark matter distribution in the universe. In this thesis we present detailed weak lensing analyses of 3 distant clusters of galaxies, using mosaics of HST WFPC2 images. We also discuss the accuracy with which one can estimate cluster masses. Lower mass systems, such as galaxy groups and field galaxy halos are studied using deep wide field ground based imaging data. We measured the mass and mass-to-light ratios of galaxy groups found in the CNOC2 survey, and derive a constraint on the density of the universe. A maximum likelihood analysis of the lensing signal induced by field galaxies is used to find the first ever constraints on the extent of dark matter halos.
