The stratospheric ozone layer protects life on earth and determines the basic thermal structure of the stratosphere, but it is sensitive to a variety of anthropogenic chemical compounds as well as solar variability and volcanic eruptions. Solar UV radiation interacts with ozone to alter stratospheric winds. The polar regions are particularly sensitive during late winter and early spring, when sunlight returns. I will provide an overview of processes affecting the ozone layer and discuss how climate change affects predictions of ozone recovery during this century, and how solar effects influence ozone.
