The characteristics of ELF-VLF emissions at magnetic conjugate points are investigated. Measurements of the polar chorus, quasi-periodic emissions, auroral chorus and auroral hiss as well as magnetic pulsations and auroral luminosity were obtained from Syowa Station, Antarctica and Husafell, Iceland from July to September, 1977. Polar chorus and quasi-periodic emissions are observed simultaneously at the conjugate pair stations, suggesting that the emissions are generated near the equatorial region in the outer magnetosphere and propagate to both hemispheres along the magnetic field lines. The conjugacy of bursts of discrete emissions and auroral hiss on the other hand is found to be generally low, with the intensity of auroral hiss much stronger in the winter hemisphere than in the summer hemisphere and discrete emission more intense in the summer hemisphere. The low conjugacy of these emissions is explained by differences in geophysical parameters (magnetic field, dip angle, geomagnetic local time and field line distribution), plasma density in the conjugate ionospheres, and preferential precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere.
