Measurements from the TIMED satellite afford a new perspective on tides and planetary waves in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere-ionosphere (MLTI) region (ca. 60-180 km). Herein, temperatures from 20-120 km from the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite are used to diagnose vertical coupling by planetary waves during the 15 July - 20 September 2002 period just prior to the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere warming that occurred. The primary waves that existed during this period are the quasi-10-day eastward propagating waves with zonal wavenumbers s = 1 and s = 2 and the stationary planetary wave with s = 1. Amplitude structures of the former waves are characterized by five maxima of order 5-8 K between 25 km and 110 km altitude with 180-degree phase shifts in-between. The stationary planetary wave is characterized by westward phase progression with height. Coincidence of the rise in eastward-1 and stationary wave-1 amplitudes with decline in eastward-2 amplitudes is suggestive that the eastward-1 wave is generated via nonlinear interaction between the eastward-2 wave and the stationary wave. The relative phase structures of the waves, i.e., coincidence of the wave ridges with changes in wave amplitudes also provide insight into the wave-wave interactions that are occurring, and that also give rise to 10-day vascillation in the zonal mean temperatures.
