The scientific data reductions for HIPPARCOS are described in general terms. Emphasis is put on the basic mathematical models representing the objects, instrument, attitude motion, and detection process. The basic star model in particular is an unresolved point source with uniform space motion. Within the hierarchic data processing built on these models, a fraction (≡15%) of "improper" observations can be accommodated, requiring more complex models. These may include double and multiple stars, single stars disturbed by veiling glare, and minor planets.
