The optical configuration of the HIPPARCOS satellite is recalled, and
the telescope assembly and focal plane assembly are described. Basic
parameters of the mission are reviewed in light of the angle stability;
telescope distortion stability; and residual chromaticity. Calibration
activities performed prior to launch are indicated.
