This review covers the major developments in radiation-belt phenomenology during the period 1970-1973, specifically concerning geomagnetically trapped particles. Adiabatic drift shells, parasitic pitch-angle diffusion, formation of the inner electron belt, artificial radiation belts, empirical studies of particle diffusion, inner-zone protons, the alpha-proton ratio, and cold-plasma injection are discussed. Two questions remain open: (1) whether quasi-trapping affects any particles having K=O (neglecting electrostatic-field effects) in a realistic model of the outer magnetosphere; and (2) how to account for temporal variations of the transport coefficients in empirical and theoretical studies involving radial diffusion.
