The series expansion of a quadratic Lagrangian in terms of small additions to a plane metric results in the Lagrangian of free gravitational field (first term of the expansion). A substitution of field variables reduces the resulting Lagrangian to the sum of standard Lagrangians which determine the relevant massless and massive scalar and tensor fields. Accordingly, the independent variation of the corresponding Lagrangian relative to massive scalar and tensor gravitational fields is possible only in the presence of a certain correlation between the coupling constants in the quadratic Lagrangian. It is shown that the addition of quadratic terms to an Eistein Lagrangian leads to the appearance of additional degrees of freedom, to massive scalar and tensor gravitons.
